Finally, someone asked, what would I say
What words would touch the younger generation today.
Where would I start, I want to apologize
I want to say I’m sorry for the issues, the challenges, the trauma
You’ve witnessed through your eyes
I want to wipe your tears,
You’ve endured pain, hidden your shame and fears
Your childhood experience has be filled with adult issues
Well beyond your years.
I want to offer a helping hand
But you’ve had hands embrace you only to choke you, a strange woman or man
You’ve had hands that have touched you, damaged your innocence
Yes, I understand
I want to give you my love, be someone you can trust
But with that, I want you to release, vent, and scream
Your emotional freedom is a must
I want to build a relationship, learn who you are, who you want to be
I want you to dream, have visions of hope, I want you to create a new reality
I want you to leave the streets, fill the classrooms, feed your mind, develop your skills
I want you to put down the guns, drop your colors, let living not killing give you a thrill
I want you to have more than I can provide
I want you to reach daily beyond your limits…..reach for the sky
You are a representative of our generation our pride.
There are lessons to be learned for both you and me
I see the light of your spirit……accept my apology.

They are powerful advocates and leaders who stand in the gap for others, giving selflessly and genuinely. It gives me great pleasure to share with you their individual stories and the outstanding work that they do.

Queen Legacy: Will That Be You?

Oprah Winfrey, Dr. Maya Angelou and Beyonce. As you read those names, what comes to mind? Powerful and independent may be some of the words that come to the surface; but more importantly, each of these women have and continue to leave a legacy. In honor of Black History Month, this article will discuss how each of us as women can leave our own legacies. Legacies within our family, within our educational system, within our places of worship and lastly; within our communities as a whole.

What we say and how we conduct ourselves on a daily basis is what will determine the legacy we leave. Make no mistake about it, each and every one of us will leave a legacy; positive or negative. Which one will you leave? Many of us are recipients of positive women who have left positive legacies that have allowed it to be just a little bit easier for us and as we continue to make progress, it is on the shoulders of those that we stand upon. Think, how different life would be if not for Rosa Parks and Dorothy Dandridge? These are the shoulders of which Dr. Maya Angelou and Oscar winning Halle Berry stands upon. Who will we lend our shoulders too?

You may say, "Easier said than done" and that may be true. Here are 4 steps in which you can leave your legacy, your mark on those who come through and into your life: You do not have to be an adult in order to leave a legacy. Take a leadership role at school. Create something that is lacking in your school. For example, if your school paper lacks important issues...write them. If your school is lacking cultural clubs/activities...create them.
Take a lead in bringing your family members together. Consistently host dinners at your home and invite your family members and encourage unity amongst your relatives and the importance of doing so.
At the workplace be that "IT" woman. The one your co workers go to when looking for answers. Become an expert in your field and be relentless in your pursuit to move up. Then become a mentor to the younger women in your company.
Volunteer and take an active leading role in your community. BE VISIBLE!

In conclusion, I would like to leave you with a quote:

"There are certain things that are fundamental to human fulfillment. The essence of these needs is captured in the phrase "to live, to love, to learn, to leave a "legacy." The need to live is our physical need for such things as food, clothing and shelter. The need to love is our social need to relate to other people, to belong, to love and to be loved. The need to learn is our mental need to develop and to grow. The need to leave a legacy is our spiritual need to have a sense of meaning, purpose, personal congruence, and contribution." ~ Stephen R. Covey

The choice is yours. Be undeterred in living a life of purpose and leaving a legacy for others to follow. Honor your history by honoring our future.

Stephanie M. Clark has a calling and passion for empowering women and girls. Her life's work has afforded her the opportunity to serve women and girls from various backgrounds including single mothers, incarcerated and formerly incarcerated women, teenage moms, and mothers & daughters. She believes there is greatness in every woman and girl regardless of their situation. She enjoys helping women and girls find and tap into their greatness so they can walk into and fulfill their God-given destinies.

Clark is well versed in all aspects of business start-up and operations. Eleven years ago she made the transition from employee to entrepreneur and has started four businesses, two non-profits and two for-profit companies. She empowers, coaches and mentors women and teen girls across the country by sharing her mistakes made and lessons learned along her journey as a serial entrepreneur. She offers practical strategies toward achieving success as a business owner to those seeking to start a business or to grow their business. In 2012, Clark will launch a for-profit social enterprise, Womanpower, a staffing and training company employing and training single mothers and women in transition to start home-based businesses helping them achieve economic self-sufficiency.

As a marketing communications guru and entrepreneur, Clark possesses over 20 years of developing and executing effective marketing and public relations programs as well as producing small to large-scale special events. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and Marketing from the University of Detroit-Mercy. She has worked in non-profit management for over 20 years and has worked with several corporations, faith-based and non-profit organizations as a marketing communications consultant.

Clark's debut book entitled "Life as a Single Mom: It Isn't Easy or Is It?" was released on October 26, 2007. She is the author of a parent handbook for incarcerated mothers, "Life As A Single Mom Behind Bars" and a character building workbook for teen girls, "Transforming Minds by Transforming Meanings" (both projects scheduled for release in 2012).

Clark founded My Daughter's Keeper, Inc. (MDK) in July 2002. MDK is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization which provided support and resources to mothers and caregivers raising adolescent and teenage daughters as well as provided self-development opportunities for women and girls. MDK worked with mothers/caregivers, preteen and teenage girls from all socioeconomic backgrounds throughout the U.S. and abroad. Expanding her work nationally, in 2008, Clark rebranded MDK as Project Single Moms Worldwide, Inc., a national advocacy and empowerment movement for single moms where she serves as its National Director.

She has been featured in national media including The Talk, FOX News, The Steve Harvey Morning Show, The Michael Baisden Show, CNN's Comcast Newsmakers, The Huffington Post, Bloomberg Urban Report, Fox TV's The Morning Show with Mike & Juliet, NAACP's Crisis magazine, Essence.com, Black Enterprise.com, NBC News' (thegrio.com) and several other local radio and television media outlets. Also, she was featured in the August 2009 issue of Family Circle magazine. Through her "The Empowered Woman" blog, Clark blogged about various women empowerment issues as a featured blogger for Essence.com. From 2008-2010, she served as the national spokesperson and career coach for the Project Working Mom and Career Stimulus Package Empowerment Tour, two online education scholarship programs.

Clark was honored by L'Oreal Paris as a 2011 Women of Worth honoree and chosen as a 2011 Who Who's in Black Atlanta. She was honored by America Online (AOL)'s ParentDish.com as one of 24 "2010 America's Most Amazing Moms" on Mother's Day. She is a 2009 Best Community Leader finalist for the Steve Harvey Hoodie Awards. She is a recipient of numerous awards and has presented keynote & motivational speeches to several faith & community-based groups, professional associations, corporations, government agencies, primary schools & colleges and has facilitated workshops to women & youth groups throughout the country. She is a native Detroiter but now resides in Georgia. She is the proud parent of her beautiful and brilliant daughter, a college student at Berklee College of Music in Boston.

My name is Monique Rivarde and I am the mother of Bobby Tillman. My son was killed November 7, 2010, at a house party with other high school students and was chosen by four boys to be beaten and stomped until they killed him. This has been so hard for me, not knowing what Bobby went through that night and knowing he died alone in the street. I also know that in order for someone to be able to attack another human being that way and kill them with their hands and feet, there is no self-love or self-worth in that individual.

Three weeks after my son's Going Home Ceremony, his friends began to come by the house, stunned at what happened to Bobby and scared to walk the streets again for fear of what may happen to them. Since there was absolutely no reasoning behind the attack on my son, his friends felt that it could happen to any one of them as well. Watching these children in pain, and feeling my own pain, I felt I had to try and do something to instill love and courage into our youth. There had to be a way to help them love themselves, so they could in turn love and respect other's lives and right to be here without the threat of violence. There is no better way to help someone else love themselves, than to show them love. I spoke with Bobby's friends and they agreed and wanted to help make their environment and schools safer.

Bobby was bullied that night by four boys. But what I began to learn was that children were being bullied in schools everywhere and the bullying was moving into the streets. Bobby's friends created "The Bobby Tillman Pact" which states ways they felt they could help their individual situations become a place of peace and violence-free. For example, the first three bullets of the Pact are: "I will respect and stay true to myself; I am an individual and special in my own way; it's ok to be me; I am accountable and responsible for my own actions." Once the Pact was created, the kids thought it would be helpful to share the Pact with others and also to show that they believed in the Pact through their actions. They began speaking about the Pact at churches and schools. They've also put together Winter Clothing Drives and "Stop the Bullying" events that would allow children to congregate together in love and peace and just have a good time without the threat and fear of violence sparking and we created BFAM, Inc. Bobby Tillman's Family through Bobby's friends...twelve of our future leaders.

It has been the worse time of my life losing my son; and honestly I only can live day to day because I don't know what the next day or month will hold for my sanity or my heart. My daughter and these children want to make a difference and that keeps me going. It's a journey no parent should have to take...my goal is to help another child to love him/herself so they will not feel violence is the answer. I want them to know they are special in their own way and destined for greatness and that is something to be so proud of. I also want the children that are doing well to receive praise for choosing to do right so they will have the strength to take a stand when they see wrong. This can be achieved through love.

"Enlightened"

The funniest thing happened just the other day,

I picked up a bible just to see what it'd say.

I had never done this so I had no idea why,

I guess I was curious about what was inside.

You see, I'm a non-believer, I always have been,

I kind of enjoyed living in sin.

I have never been to church, who had the time?

I was much to busy leading a life of crime.

Then, someone told me that GOD is everywhere,

all I had to do is recite his prayer.

Something else I've never done, I didn't know how to pray,

I constantly lived life in the evilest of ways.

So, I opened this book to the very first words,

"Let there be light," is what I heard.

WHO WAS THAT? What had they said?

"GOD IS GOOD," then on I read.

I needed to know the rest of the story,

About this man called God and all His glory.

I don't know what came over me,

But, life now seems bright where darkness used to be.

I dropped down, I got on my knees,

I thanked this God for setting me free.

Today, I walk with the Lord Jesus Christ,

He has enlightened my soul,

He has enriched my life.

Embracing The Moment

Can it be true that there are people in your life for the sole purpose of fulfilling your dreams, your goals, your destiny? If so, what are you doing for them?
Could there be another doing for them what they do for you? (I'm not talking about your spouse or boo). I mean those who stand behind the opportunity.
The educator, the mentor, those who have no connection to you but to lead you on your way......what about them.
Sit back and think how many people, because of their words, their insight, their input......pushed you, motivated you, encouraged you.....just because they saw something special in you.
Do you ever wonder what did they see?
Where would you be if they hadn't stopped you, spoke to you or for you, .......life and what it brings. Embracing the moment!!!

Are you hungry, are you feeding your passion?

Can you make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich? Think about the simplicity....think about the difficulty......what does it really take? You have to like the ingredients, you have to have the tools to make the sandwich, you have to understand you may have to substitute (wheat for white bread, jam for jelly), can you stand the change? Can you wait until you have all it takes to make it? If you rush, you may tear the bread.....putting a hole in the project. Ridding yourself of the frustration, you remain hungry.

You see this simple task can become a major disaster. You may shy away from making sandwiches.....have you done that with your purpose, your passion? Have you lost your taste for building on your talents? Have you given up because you have to take your time? Are you afraid to change a few things to get more? Ridding yourself of the frustration you will always desire more.

Just Venting……Bringing in 2012

Happy New Year….for those of you who think it will not be a continuation of 2011 and the years before. I stopped making resolutions at the start of a new year when I realized by June I often forgot what most of my resolutions were. I started a new habit that I must say over the past ten years has worked for me. In August, the month of my birth, I think about my accomplishments, set new goals, and pray on them. I think in connection with my birth date those resolutions made in August are more important to me. I remember my grandmother saying “Just keep living or You’ll understand it more as you grow.” She never took the questions I asked or the conversations we had any further once she made that statement. Ten years ago I understood. There was nothing else for her to say. I had to experience life to understand living.

I’ve thought back to my high school years, college, my first marriage, child birth and parenting, my jobs and career, friends, relatives and my fears only to find I had to keep living to come to an understanding. Once the time has passed, you can’t change what has been done. No need to dwell on it.

Now it’s 2012 and I’m still yearning to be. I still want so much more and the time has passed. I can’t count the opportunities I ignored seeking other corridors, other options, only to find my choice was a dead end. The advice given by many, some with good intentions and others with their own agenda, again most often were ignored. There were relationships that had a veil of issues, complications and drama; relationships that never revealed the truth but were accepted by me longing for love. I longed to be in the mix, fearing I would be looked at as different or left alone. Now in 2012 I can confess, I cheated myself. The blame I harbored, thinking they somehow held the power for me to grow. I see now and understand that I cannot change the character of others nor expect them to change for me. What they offered or gave they saw as the best they could do with what they had. I’ve learned that titles; Mother, Father, Friend, Husband, Daughter and Son…..carry more weight than most can handle. When given these titles of distinction, there are those who don’t care to be what they are called to be. These titles hold a power, a love, an emotional tie that some fail to hold and dare to maintain. But the responsibility of acceptance……doesn’t negate the fact that my past was molded by these people I held to a higher standard. My emotional needs were thought of as secondary to the materials provided. I had more than most and with that said what more did I expect. I’ve looked back at these times, these relationships and found, I survived and today I have done what my grandmother said. I have kept living, dodged most of life’s obstacles, and yes, I have grown.

I remember yelling to the top of my lungs, during a heated argument with my mother, that I couldn’t wait until I was grown. Well her response was, “Neither can I.” Now looking back, my teenage ranting struck a nerve with my mother but she never considered my life as I saw it. But who does? Why stroke the emotions of a child in rage, a husband who cheats, or a friend who has issues? We don’t care much about how life is for others…..we tend to live for self and not others. But over the years, growth takes you through the changes that you need to be “grown”. I no longer ignore feelings that are scarred or bruised. I’ve learned those scars can keep you from moving on…..growing up.

2012 arrived and I brought it in standing in church singing praise and being grateful for it all. I understand that complaining about what I have and don’t have will only stagger the steps as life pushes me toward my destiny. My goals, objectives, accomplishments and failures are and always were the result of my choices. They have been for quite some time and yelling I want to be grown falls again on deaf ears. My title and responsibility as a Mother, Grandmother, Wife or any other must be held high and if for no other reason, 2012 must be a year of growth.

1. What are you leaving behind in 2012?
A. In 2012, I don't have time to look back.......if I'm truly leaving it.....lost it and didn't carry it into 2012.....I don't want to slow my pace, looking back at it.
2. What is your resolution for 2012?
A. Not to tie myself to what I won't remember by Feb. Usually that's when I forget I made a resolution. I have goals, a vision.....I'm still on a path.....and I didn't get motivated by a resolution.
3. How are you bringing in the New Year?
A. Being grateful, humbly thanking God for keeping me here....thankful for those who have touched and inspired me. Praying and Worshipping.......partying within my spirit.
4. What changes are you making in 2012?
A. Accepting my growth in life, relationships, and business.....there's not an answer for every encounter but there's always a reason......I'll be more accepting of the reasons.
5. What was most memorable about 2011 for you?
A. I saw the works of God in 2011....He held my family together, healed my Godson after a near fatal hit and run, he balanced my finances when there was no balance and so much more....I saw the Greatness of God.

Christmas is never the same as usual.....it comes and goes bringing the spirit and leaving a sense of warmth. It's Christmas Eve and I'm feeling an emptiness, missing the laughter and smiles of my little ones who now have little ones. Such blessed memories of Christmas past.......I've been blessed, I recognize it more and more, day after day, year after year.....and I celebrate the God in me, the God in my life..........My Christmas wish this year is for all, who I touch with my words, my assistance, my friendship, kinship and love......may you remember your Christmas' of your past, enjoy your today.....your tomorrow....and this season.....you be the reason to bring that smile that laughter to someone you love, someone you know, someone you touch ......Merry Christmas to you all!

I would close my eyes and pray that God would come my way.

He Forgot
Who I was, who he was, the love we once had
The times shared weren't all bad
I walked away, upset but with no regrets
There was no need to wait, no need to fret
They say you reap what you sow......
You get what you get.......
If I had stayed, continued to be played......

Well......that's why I left him.......with her right where he laid.

Happy Thanksgiving - Recognizing the Blessings

Happy Thanksgiving to you all as you recognize the blessings while you celebrate with your family and friends. Today as we give thanks, share the warmth of family and giving, remember golden memories, let us all recognize we are truly blessed. Daily I give thanks, praise and prayer.....I don't visit my church home as often as I would like, as most know I work on Sunday mornings. But I lift prayer, praise and thanks because I have truly been blessed and if for no other reason, I am grateful. I can remember Thanksgiving being shattered for me after my grandmother went on to be with the angels....the holiday changed drastically. The preparations she made for that one day, the fuss over how the food would be prepared, the family gathering at her request, the prayer for unity and love, and yes the enjoyment of eating and laughing throughout the day. Today, as I reflect, without my grandmother, mother or father, I recognize I am and have been blessed throughout the years with children, grandchildren, family and friends.

Thanksgiving is a time to be grateful, a time to recognize the blessings and share them with others, a time to understand that the miracles, blessings and love is what sustains you and your family. I recognize that this year has been a year of miracles for me, I've been blessed abundantly, and today,Thanksgiving Day.....I am grateful.

After the passing of my mother in 2009 and my father in 2010, I prayed that 2011 would bring peace and unity to my family. When prayers go up......I was blessed to be promoted in a time where many were jobless, my oldest received her Masters Degree and continued her education seeking higher ground. My daughter-n-law was promoted, my son's venture in comedy took him on many road trips and I published my sixth novel. In everyone's life storms shall prevail and in August my Godson was the victim of a hit and run accident. He was left for dead......traumatic brain injury was the diagnosis and with this, we the family got notification that it would be a slim chance for his survival. Prayer works! I was blessed to see the power of prayer......A prayer circle was formed in the hospital by not only our family and friends but the staff at the hospital, others who were visiting their family members, officers, EMT's, classmates, teachers, the Dean and students of the college his will be attending.....God is Good......Prayer is beautiful .......I posted his condition on the internet, Facebook family prayed.......we stayed in prayer. This young man lives today......he was released from the hospital 27 days after the accident......a Miracle. The EMT's were awarded and recognized for they expediency, that saved his life. They have found no residual damage, other than a meniscus tear in the knee.....but through prayer, and God's mercy.....today and every day we are blessed having him with us.

Today I want to thank you, family for your support. I want to thank you friends for your words of prayer during my times of grief, bewilderment, confusion.......through it all. I want to thank you supporters for being my platform. I want to thank you all for purchasing my novels, reading my post, keeping me humble in my journey. I am Grateful today, and give thanks. I recognize my blessings.....My husband, my children and my grandchildren.....my family and friends. I am blessed and I am Grateful for it all.

Their class reunion promises to fulfill Kalliah’s need for a vacation from her job and a shaky romance, while Dante needs to explore the remnants of their relationship before making a serious commitment to another. Stephon must take his life back from the street and crime he’s become addicted to. Miles is hoping to finally tell his friends how one of them has held his heart for more than ten years. Cherese needs the support of her friends as she struggles her way out of a destructive marriage. “Both Sides of the Fence” by Mondell Pope- 5 Star Review

Let me start off by saying that M.T. Pope did a spectacular job in the “Both Sides of the Fence” 3 part series. For this to be the authors first time at writing he blew me away with his imagery, drama, explosive action, and incredible ability of creating stories within a story to tie each character into one another. He exposed the very pain that one can endure when we hold on to secrets. I was so engulfed in this story that I found myself waking up in the middle of the night just to read because I just had to know what was going to happen next. I kid you not; Mr. Pope did a great job tying up the loose ends of the Black family. James was my most hated character since the beginning. I just couldn’t understand his motives, his anger, bitterness and down right evil spirit but by the end of part 3 I was able to understand a little better and I actually empathized with him. I wanted to reach inside the book and just hug him and give him a second chance at life. Just like with Part 1 & 2 I laughed, I cried, and I was angry but I never stopped reading. This is a MUST read if you have read the other 2 books. I guarantee you will NOT be disappointed.

Catt Chasin - Shana Burton 5 Star Review

Catt Cason is the main character in Shana Burton's latest release, Catt Chasin. Catt's boss, Oni decides to hire a handsome and smart playboy Jamal Ford to help raise the sales and save them from demise. Catt and Jamal bump heads immediately. Catt is a serious woman who does not have times for games, whereas Jamal is a cool, calm, collected man who enjoys work but understands that there must be a balance between work and play.

Catt and Jamal are paired to take a three week business trip together to promote their new product and things seem to take a turn at this point. Catt and Jamal develop a friendship that provides occasion to talk and share on many levels which opens the eyes of the characters. Throughout the story God’s presence is a pillar of strength and hope and with his help Catt is able to lead Jamal to accepting Christ as his personal savior; however I noticed that as Catt and Jamal’s relationship strengthened the “presence” of God was less visible. The plot was predictable as well as the ending. It took me a little longer to read this book than usual reads. I would recommend Catt Chasin to readers who enjoy Christian Fiction or someone seeking a general inspirational story.

Where Would I Be - Laura Johnson 5 Star Review

I decided to read this book in honor of Domestic Violence month and all I can say is WOW I loved this book! As a professional working with individuals who suffer from trauma, unfortunately this wasn’t a new story to hear. I sometimes suffer vicarious trauma from those that I work with and I did the same with Lisa and Marc. Laura Johnson did an awesome job bringing out the emotion in me. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone suffering from or survivors of any type of abuse or simply just looking for a good read. I believe that in reading this story the reader can grab hold of the strength that Lisa gained to change her life and make better choices in life. It is a story of power and perseverance prevailing over bondage. Laura, to know that these accounts were taken from your own personal experiences allowed me to appreciate the reading more. You are a true example of “battered to blessed”. I believe that Ms. Johnson is a gifted writer and I anticipate reading more from her.

By now most serious readers know the name of Trice Hickman, author of Unexpected Interruptions. Knowing her, and knowing her ability to captivate you page after page may cause you to move your collection of novels and make room for all of her upcoming novels. If you're using a kindle.....this is an author's work that you'd want on your shelf.

It's not often that a book causes me to look at myself in a different light. You know, get into the characters, make their issues your own.......and put your twist and turns in before turning the page. Unexpected Interruptions touches the topic of interracial relationships; with the tag line be careful what you ask for...You just might get it. At the end of this 279 page ride, the relationship between Victoria Small, Ted Thornton and Parker Brightwood I found myself questioning could I? Could I date, fall in love and find myself in an emotional turmoil between a successful black male and a successful white male?

Victoria found herself torn, making excuses, denying reality and simply fighting the truth. This struggle as shown in this sophisticated writing demonstrates when emotions run wild.....there is no color barrier. As she puts up barriers, her see through reasons not to love Ted Thornton she finds her walls of support were weak while dating Parker Brightwood. I loved the author's humor, honesty and thought provoking conversations posed between the main characters. Victoria's teetering between two men, the views from her family and friends, and the jealousy of others gives the book life. Any woman who has dated outside of their race has been Victoria. Any woman who has fallen in love and carried pain is Victoria. Any woman who has been swept off her feet is Victoria.......and if love is often confusion between your libido, emotions, and common sense for any woman.....they can be Victoria. I was pleased to find that Trice painted love without a color line. Ted Thornton and Parker Brightwood were men, educated, employed and totally in love with Victoria Small. Love has no limits, no barriers, no color.........but in this novel love comes with Unexpected Interruptions.

Your Baggage - Time to Unload

Just imagine having to literally carry your baggage everywhere you went. Not luggage for a trip or a move.....your baggage.....you know that relationship you have with your family, your boo, your ex boo, your boo's mama and the rest of their crew. The baggage you carry because of your baby's daddy or mama, your boss, the folks on the job or at your school, the man or woman you married and their baggage. Think for a moment.......we talk about the bag lady...Erikah Badu sang about her, but it's true.....we talk about her and her baggage. Each of us carry our load every day to and from work, in and out of our house, from relationship to relationship and then we add......us! Bad mood, think we too good mood, better than the next one mood.....or wait, I would have been better off without you mood, I don't give a @#@# mood.......Baggage.

Now some of us become the baggage checker. We check others baggage. We get all in it, rip it apart, unpack it, separate it by topic or issue....yeah we get so involved with their baggage....we carry their load and ours. We carry it so long that we don't even realize some of the baggage we're carrying belongs to some one else. Granted we're loving folks, caring folks, the scripture even tells us to help others.......now that you're experiencing baggage overload you want to unload your baggage on someone else.......and if you can't get rid of it........that frustration, aggravation, becomes your sick and tired song a daily anthem. The wrath is put upon anyone who tells you.....it's not that bad, smile the day just started, or simply have a good day.

Imagine meeting someone and you see the baggage surrounding them.....visualize some of your friends, family members, co-workers, church members and their baggage standing in front of you. You'd take a step back only to trip over your own baggage. Yes we all have it but like that luggage you take on a trip......you only pack it when you're traveling and you unpack it when you return. The items get put in place until you will need them again. Unpack that baggage, communicate with those who have burdened you with their load, simply give them back their load. Don't carry what is not yours. Don't attach yourself to their issues, their belongings.

Your baggage is enough, you don't need others........unload. Get rid of what you no longer need to carry. The ex has been out of your life for years but you still hold on to his opinion of who you were. You've accepted the new job, the new position but you talk about what responsibilities you had. Your friend borrowed money and never repaid you.....this was five years ago. Whoever, whatever, whenever.......let it go.....unload.

Someone Called him "Nigga"

Someone called him "Nigga", they yelled it from the door.
His grandmother heard it in her bedroom, the pet name ripped her to the core.

"Hold up", he yelled from the window, "Need to tell Grams, I leaving."
He approached his grandmother quietly, tears were flowing, he thought she was grieving.

"Gram, are you okay? What has upset you so?"
She looked in her grandson's face only hoping he could see their souls.

The souls of the heritage she knew, her raising was from the deep south,
The souls that would cringe from the pain they suffered from the whips and chains, as the Masta's spat the name "Nigga'" from their mouths.

"Gram, why are you crying so? Are you hurt, what can I get for you?"
The souls that took it all, in spite of it all, those who stood tall so you can do what you do.

"Gram, nod your head please speak to me, tell me what you need."
The words of her grandson hit her heart he was a part of their seed.

She patted her face with her tattered dress, calming herself to speak.
He waited patiently, as the name "Nigga, yo Nigga" was spoken as though it was a beat.

His grandmother shook her head and wept again, her grandsons feelings were touched.
The love his grandmother had for him had been destroyed in one word, her teachings crushed.

She taught him from the time he was able to walk he was the descendant of warriors and kings.
If he answered to the call of "Nigga" or "boy" what did her teachings mean.

She taught him that although his father and uncles were not what they were deemed to be.
God would see her in the grave before she would let the streets take another from the family tree.

"Nigga you comin' or what? What you want me to do"
Her grandson spoke ever so softly, "Gram you know I love you."

"Go head man and don't yell no more......by the way my name is Raheem."
He returned to his grandmother and opened his arms.
"Gram, tell me more about those kings."

Just Venting- My Vison- A Puzzle to Most

Our dreams, our visions, our thought process that leads us to accomplishing our goals, at times are distant. However, when taking that moment, the me time, time to gain clarity.....I can see clearly where I'm headed is not the path for many. I won't label them. I won't say they're haters, jealous, crabs in a barrel, unfaithful friends, or even those that don't know. I'll simply say, my vision is a puzzle. It's often a puzzle for me.

I get pieces, ideas, reasons to do one thing in hopes that it will evolve into the bigger picture.....a part of the puzzle that will complete me, my work, my accomplishments, my goals. We all do it. You take your idea and add to it. Your commitment, the time you spend, you don't even think about. You assess what you've done over time and when you fail to reach that predetermined short term goal you discard that puzzle piece. Why venture down a path to a dead end? Why waste your time on an idea that doesn't bring you success, an accomplishment? Why share your thoughts with others whose vision, their puzzle is not yours?

It has been said many ways. In sharing your vision you give a part of you that you won't gain again. Once you experience that loss you're on another path seeking a route without dead ends. That opening that will bring clarity to those who are watching from the shadows waiting to tell you...."You've wasted your time and your money."

I am vested in my vision, I will continue to reach for pieces to fit my puzzle. However, the process of selecting....when, where, why, who will have to change. My vision has changed as most of us, in growing, think that we have exceeded our perimeters. I don't feel that way at all, but I do feel that my growth will be stagnant if I don't change my route. My goal hasn't changed.....it's the puzzle pieces.

Your vision, is your puzzle, only you know what the picture is once completed. You are putting it together. Don't waste time waiting for others to bring you that piece......the one that will link you to the next piece. It's your vision, your puzzle.....make the connections at your pace, your commitment, your resources. Your vision, the completed picture.....is not clear to those who you may think see the finished picture or even care about the finished picture. No one cares if the vision is not theirs. No one cares unless they are connected.....they have to be a part of your puzzle, a part of your vision.

That's the part of the puzzle that is the most difficult.......how many are a part of your vision? Take the time to check....Just Venting

I met you and was introduced to your books at the African American Authors Expo in Columbia, MD a couple of weeks ago. I was the facilitator in the conference room where you gave your all too brief 15 minute talk. I did not purchase anything during the Expo; however, your story lines peaked my interest, and I dowloaded a sample of Family Serets to my Kindle this afternoon. Well, I could not put in down, and I'm getting ready to purchase and dowload the entire book to my Kindle in a few minutes, I can't wait to read your other novels as well.

The Sanity of Marriage- Thoughts on Our Anniversary

To Love and Cherish, for Better or Worse, in Sickness and in Health, From This Day Forward......forever and ever......amen.

Seventeen years ago, we said vows before God, family, friends. We had a past, with only dreams of a future....and prays that we would indeed be blessed with a true bond, an understanding friendship, forgiving hearts and yes, the happily ever after. Being believers in God, we quickly recognized without His divine intervention, those vows, our love would not be blessed without ridding ourselves of old habits, past experiences, and yes.....those who thought, "What are they doing?"

Seventeen years ago, we decided marriage needed to be sane in order to survive. We needed to learn what was best for us as individuals first. Understand, that in a need to fulfill the desire of others we often neglect ourselves. One easily forgets that compromise does not mean giving in; saying what you mean is crucial but not malicious and harmful; and there is never a reason to make comparisons to your past.......marriage.

Yes, we both were married before so........our expectations were high. We wanted more than we had in the first marriage. We needed to learn what we wanted for our family, our children and ourselves.....without the drama; without others pulling the "I told you" plug that lights up a stage, with scenes from past loves and hates. We learned who we were first and grew to who we wanted to be.

Seventeen years ago, we understood the words for better or worse. After one marriage we could identify immediately when it was better....for we knew what the worse would bring between us. Love held us together through the ups and downs....through it all. In sickness and in health, the unexpected interruptions that caused our life to be disheveled, painful, and overbearing. Those issues that bring us closer to each other. Those issues that brought us to God in prayer........

The pressures of a husband, the stress of a wife. The pressures of a wife the stress of a husband....seventeen years later and we're still here.....still in love. Our forever continues to carry us on, day by day and we understand there is sanity to the blindness of love. Seventeen years, and today those vows mean more than the day we said them for understanding comes only to those who live by them.

3 Star Review - What White Boyz Want

Bridget Midway, Seressia Glass, Lena Matthews, Raquel Taylor and Simone Harlow crafted this anthology,five short stories highlighting the quest for love. "Bitter Ball, Sex on South Beach, Heart Wrangler, Bayou Temptress and Cowboy Cool", all have a different reason that puts friends and strangers on a one way street to happily ever after. The stories, I found were similar, sometime too similar just in a different setting, but believable for today's lovers. One night stands, childhood dreams come true, loneliness fulfilled, and yes even persuasion plays a role when two unknowing hearts realize there is undeniable satisfaction for both parties in the bedroom.

The characters, the female being black and the male being white, in each story left me wondering where was the rest of the world and why would these women choose these men over their black counterparts. It was clearing understood that there was an attraction, however, the passion was beyond my belief. The stories reminded me of good fairy tales and I waited for the "Happily Ever After" writing at the end.

The reading would be for a young adult as the experience of the couples set the tone for those who had not had much experience in love. I enjoyed the read and yes, despite my desire for more substance and more pages, I would recommend the book to those looking for a different type of reading. Great work ladies......wish you the best.

Oprah and Tyler....What do they owe us?

I've been reading quite a few discussions and opinions about Oprah and Tyler gaining success due to the support of African Americans and yet giving very little back. This has been said in communities, organizations, through the literary world of authors and readers, even between other well known people; such as Spike Lee and other entertainers. In reading what the media provides in regards to these icons gains, contributions, and yes their efforts to be the lead for many African Americans, I found it became disturbing the more I read.

As African Americans, it seems we often assume our responsibilities should be consumed by those of our race that "have made it". It has been said that once they've reached the top that they should and would give back to the community, preferably our community. We want them to remember those of us they "left" behind by sharing their riches, opening doors, and yes allowing us to share in their growth and wealth. This of course is regardless to if we are making an effort to improve our communities or not.

Oprah, it has been said, does little to nothing for black authors, or black schools here in America, and the list goes on. She has been accused of not having "enough" staff that represents "us" and pushing those who can not identify with the needs of the black community. She has plenty to spend yet shares none with "her own". The stories go on and sadly we read, agree and talk about it as though we know each and every charity, school, or donation made by Harpo or Oprah. We only know what the media prints and feeds us. I'm not agreeing or disagreeing just venting.

Tyler Perry, has been said to have done "us" wrong in a similar way. His depiction of the black family, black women, men and the dysfunctional lives we live, have left authors, producers and Hollywood upset. Upset that this format has made him millions, upset because they have been excluded, upset because he just as Oprah has done things his way. Authors and those hopeful of having their work on the stage or in film have accused him of being selfish. How dare he not open the doors, welcome those of the same color with open arms, allow his sistahs and brothers to share in his dream. These authors, as well as in film write about these same black women, no good or missing family man, and the drugs or the hustle in the street. But these articles state emphatically that it is his responsibility as it is Oprah's to pull us along.....just as Harriet Tubman freed the slaves.

These icons like others; Jackie Robinson, Rosa Parks, our President Barack Obama, have opened doors, they have contributed and in most cases all that they have done for "us" is not mentioned or noted, yet we form groups and voice our dislike. Our dislike because they found a way, made a way, worked tediously and became what we all desire to be....successful. They have and will be marks in our history and American History. The President was and is expected in some way to do more for us than for any other race.......now wouldn't that be a change for America.

This is nothing new, this is what we do. We see others gain and immediately find a way to accuse them of using us and owing us a part of their success. We don't want to hear the way it was done, the rules they followed, the formulas they created to build a route to accomplish their goals. We want to walk straight in their office doors and just because we are a part of the race that they should know the most about.......we want what they have too. We want them to promote our work, build our foundations, give us jobs, and remember that we are their ball and chain. We want them to take on a race of people who if they ever worked together, followed the path provided would have, would build, would promote, sustain and succeed.

What amazes me, especially as an author is the blogs, the postings in the groups, and the articles written. I have read and went back to post that have been written and read again how some have debated who Oprah promotes, what Tyler writes or portrays in film and on stage. However, when questioned by new writers, authors who are seeking information, those same folk have banished them, insulted them, refused to give information....stating you have to put in the work. You have to pay for simplistic information because the time of the author who is still hustling for themselves is too valuable. The insults....I can't even repeat the coldness I have read and yet we want the doors to be open simply because. I've heard time and time again that our voice should not be limited, we should be allowed to write what we want, have covers that depict what we want.....regardless to the public's eye. There should be not limit to the provocative or explicit language on our covers......it's okay to be grouped as just African American writers, because after all that's all we are, regardless to our individual genre's. There are groups, websites, and those who detest the posting of the "new" author....promotions are deleted, refused and frowned upon, or selective.....because if you're new you haven't proven yourself. I've even read some who comment negatively when the "new" authors simply makes a comment. Yet Oprah and Tyler are responsible to pull us, the same folk want this, those who won't and don't pull others.

The same rules exist on all levels. Let's face it, some of us both new and seasoned are not professional. We don't have and won't meet the requirements to be promoted or offered. Our game is not as tight as we think it is. Let's not forget the simple rule, "Do unto others....." Have we taken on at least some of the responsibility of others? Do we help, refer, direct or assist when we can with no stings attached? Do we give back or turn our backs? Can we honestly say that all we do or have done is noted, understood, or even observed? I can only imagine a day in the life of Oprah or Tyler. I often become overwhelmed when others ask questions, want assistance or post on my page just because they know I write. I have given back even before publishing and no I don't look back for the payment.

I don't say that our icons shouldn't give back, but we, those of us that are seeking that plateau of success should write our pages in the community now. Yes, I believe we all must pay our dues, pay for service, and yes work effortlessly to succeed.....but I don't believe that Oprah or Tyler owe us anything other that delivering a message to the world that "we", deserve to have a seat in the row of success because "we" worked for it. Now if they save "us" a seat or two .....could we at least get to the venue on our own?

I pen, novels and stories, but my passion began with poems.
I write them simply because these are the thoughts I own.
I don't have to wait for your approval, or you to look over them criticize and then decide
Whether they are worth the public's time or money, hell what's often good you crucify

I pen, about it all, the drama, the suspense, the fiction but believe
When I write poetry it's not about you, it's about my mental release.
I don't have to grasp your attention before the end of the page or chapter
You see after you read a piece I've penned, you'll long for the ever after

I pen, to touch the emotions that are hidden, often buried, hidden deep
There's power in the tongue but fire in the pen, I send the message that you've been longing to keep
I don't have to apologize for the tears that drop as you read each line
You'll understand it today and the words will saturated your dreams for a lifetime.

I pen, yes everyday even if I don't write a sentence, line or phrase
You see I've been blessed, even at times I am amazed
These words I write come suddenly, from my heart, my soul, filtering through my head
I write the words that keep the listener well fed.

I pen, for you whether you read, understand or care not
I pen, for me cause if I didn't write it these words would not stop.
I pen, I write, my written expression, is my creativity,
Is not a lesson learned, but the gift God bestowed on me.

This Business.......is like an Education......What have you learned?

I took on writing when I was younger. What age? I couldn't tell you; after the death of my mother I was going through her things and found poems, notes or thoughts, stories and a few other things I wrote and totally forgot about. What stood out for me was during a class in college, I began writing poems. I collected them for years never thinking about publishing. I showed them to those who would nod gracefully and at times request my work. I've made greeting cards, never was much for buying cards, even Hallmark. It turned into a small business, collecting monies to cover the cost of printing. I never thought about charging for my voice conveying my customer's thoughts.

As some of you may know in 2007, I released my first published work and decided to put my hand in the fire.......the business. As in all business ventures, there are bumps and bruises and corners to turn. Taking advice from those that know and don't know, as well as those who think they know. In the business, the art of creating your book is natural to the writer where as the publishing, marketing, promoting and distribution is an education. You learn from those who read your work, those who review, those who want you to be a part of their plight, those who compare you to others and the list goes on. The literary groups, discussions, and authors who get together to network and share, all have an opinion of who you are and what you should do to make your experience and sales better.

Do you know your audience? Do you know your genre? Do you know the cheaper printer, editor or graphic artist? Do you want to go the traditional or self publishing route? Did you do a query letter? Did you seek an agent? Is your title or cover too risky? Are you writing for a particular audience? Is your hustle enough? Why aren't you hustling every day? Are you getting enough exposure? Are you getting the right exposure? Will the events bring you sales? What is your budget? The business is an education and if you don't learn.......you won't graduate to the next level.

Each author has their own route to travel. What works for some, what some may be able to afford, what time they spend varies from author to author, project to project. As I began to understand the business, I decided not to be overwhelmed. You see this venture is my passion, my hobby, and not necessarily a means of support. Like many authors I work full time. I travel and attend signings and literary events part time. I hustle daily on the internet, promote through mailings and make calls during my off hours. My plans are to retire, and yes write, publish and build the business full time.

Like my education, I am studying. I have taken on this venture and I am determined to graduate. Like anyone's education, you need only to be determined to achieve and you will. The harder you work the better your grade. Failure is not an option if you plan on progressing. Graduation for most authors, I would imagine, would be that "Best Seller". That title that goes over the top........the list of authors who have graduated to that status through the traditional or independent route is interesting. Especially since a lot of traditionally published authors started as independent authors. Selling out of their cars, on the street, at fairs and other events, they found a platform for their work, an audience and graduated. Each took on a personal challenge and became famous for what was a passion or their hobby.

The creativity of an independent author is limitless, as is their style or promoting or selling. Another education for some and for others a struggle. There are many who have an ability to sell an empty box while others get tongue-tied selling their own publication. Many sit behind the PC and become a blog sensation, but in public become overwhelmed with a live audience. There are many who don't push enough with regret and others who push hard and succeed. Again, each author's venture defines the end result. Does one educate themselves with the knowledge of the business and just rise or do you learn and excel?

We can look at all facets of life and find there are different levels. I've often laughed when looking at the certificates and degrees in the doctor's office and wondered if they graduated making an "A" or a "C". Either way they are a doctor. None of us, or at least a few would go to a doctor that had been openly reported to have no knowledge of medicine. There are reasons for learning your craft and promoting yourself as an author. The main reason is not that you are better than those who don't walk your walk or talk or talk. The main reason is because your writing is worth the time that the reader will spend reading it. Secondly, I would dare to say, would be getting paid. As competitive as this business may be, I would say that a true author would have no reason to get into the business to merely compete.

This business is an education. One that has no grade level, no term or semester, or deadline to learn or earn. The reward is to see your books on the shelves and then empty shelves. Your name on the best seller list, your titles requested by thousands. However, gradually or immediately depends on you. Your methods of publishing, your promotions, your technique of the hustle depends on you. As the author you have to be happy with your results and understand why your results are what they are. Like your education, you can always learn more......by watching, researching, networking......your height, your success is limitless. Being comfortable with who you are in this business is just as important as your sales.

Biography - K.L. Belvin

K.L. Belvin is a prime example of what happens when you allow God to take control of your life. A father of six, Dean of students for the New York City Department of Education for over

twelve years and a Christian, K. L. is also the co-founder of Bravin Publishing LLC, a literary publishing company geared towards publishing authors who are presenting minorities as role models for today's youth specifically, the African-American communities. In June 2008, K. L. released his first manuscript called "A Man in Transition," a book of poems, stories and personal observations. With the success of the first book K. L. decided it was time to expand his potential.

In February of 2010, K. L. and his wife, Ms. New York Plus America 2010 who also serves as the creative director of their vision, Tiffany Braxton Belvin, created their own boutique publishing company called, Bravin Publishing LLC. In April 2010, Bravin Publishing released their second published book for author, Jovan Roseboro titled, "The Only One That Can Stop Me Is Me." K. L. has completed his second book "From Gigolo to Jesus," released in February 2011 through Bravin Publishing. The book discusses his journey from being a whore to a man of God. He discusses how gaining access to pornography at a young age and having no male role models led him to a life of inward and outward destruction which included being a part of over twenty-five miscarriages and abortions combined, having six children with five different women, being married and cheating, divorced, all while being lead to hearing the Lord's voice, changing his life, getting married to a woman he cheated on three times while they were dating, reconnecting with all his children, even one he found out about twenty six years later, and reconnecting with his father after thirty nine years, whom he had never met. The book focuses on where he was to how he became as a mentor, author, educator and now most importantly, a man of God.

K. L. has published credits in poetry, fictional and non-fictional stories. Over the years K. L. changed his focus of writing from erotic based content to romance, spiritual inspirations and social promotion due to personal religious choices. It is his hope to offer the world-focused insight of a man who has completely changed his life from one of misogyny to helping and supporting others. His writing proves his growth as a man, educator and husband who now, attempts to offer counsel, entertainment and guidance to all he meets. He has been fortunate enough to have performed and/or appeared on various internet radio programs like The Jay Everday Radio Show, Blog talk Radio's Black Butterfly, Urban Literary Review, Black Authors Network, and De'Hitmen Present the Assassins Lounge and as a co-host, performed spoken word at New York's Bowery Poetry Club, as part of the Urban Erotika showcase and various other locations. K. L. posses an A.A.S. in business from Kingsborough Community College; City University of New York, a B.S. in Education from York College; City University of New York and hold a Master's Degree in Education, specializing in Curriculum Writing, Assessments and Teaching from Walden University. K. L. anticipates beginning his Ph.D. studies in the near future and credits his enormous success to God and his wife who also serves as his best friend.

Are we truly blessed?

When we say we are blessed, what does that mean?
Health, wealth, resources, finances?
Do we say we are blessed because we merely survive, because life's turmoil has not defeated us?
Do we say we are blessed because of comparisons, because of what fate has granted?
Because of what has been bestowed upon us?

When we say we are blessed is our faith a must?
Must we pray every night, every day?
Must we attend Sunday services, tithe, serve on the ministry board?
Must we tend to the sick, feed the hungry, and carry our Bible when we leave home?

When we say we are blessed are we seeking respect?
Are we expecting to be treated differently?
Do we have the desire to be separated from those who know not their blessing?
Do we separate ourselves and shut out others?

When we say we are blessed do we truly believe it?
Do we hesitate to say it to some but emphatically announce it to others?
Do we understand everyone is blessed and not just us?
Do we expect the blessings of others to touch us too?

You see when someone answers the question "How are you?"
And the answer comes back as, "I am blessed"
A blessed spirit would also add "and you."
A blessed spirit glows well before the answer is given
A blessed spirit extends themselves, to touch and move the blessing on.

Are we truly blessed if we are not willing to share our blessing?
Are we truly blessed if we are not able to simply say, "I am blessed and you"
And you......And you....And you......
Are we truly blessed if we block the blessings of others?
For you see, I am blessed, and you are too.

Bad Experience......Use as a Tool

A bad experience in any aspect of your life leaves you with flaring warning signs. Unfortunately you become hesitate about doing business, having a relationship with, or committing your time or energy to anyone or anything that reminds you of that unfortunate moment in your life. If we keep the warning as a guide, we can avoid the perils that others set. Handle your business don't allow the business to handle you.

Your business has a plan, an outline a direction and although you may find yourself lost, confused or misguided, your business is guided by your commitment to your plan. We often seek others to further our mission, add credence to work, promote, and service our needs. These tasks cost and most often (if not sponsored) we sacrifice to assure our product is presented in the best light. We travel near and far, post and promote, and go to events that would further our dreams. Bad experiences are like the detour, the road that ends with no indication if you should pursue the journey, a wrong turn, left or right could cause us to become discouraged. Unpack our product, put it on display and without an audience what do you have........the making of a bad experience. How does one pickup their spirits without counting the cost, the lost, the frustration? How does one think about the event they skipped to come to an event that provided little to no restitution?

Your business has a plan and as nothing in life is a guarantee, you learn from experience. The bitter with the sweet, the good with the bad.....weigh the options and change the course. Each year is a year of growth, as it should be for any business owner. As an Author we often forget, as self-published authors, we have a business. We are not trapped to one lane on this highway to our final destination in this field. There are plenty that print, edit, promote, advise, design covers, typeset.....and yes, host events. Your calendar is based on the sales made, the networking done, and yes the hospitality through it all. Choose and understand this walk, as a author, and a publisher is not promised to get you there fast. Most of us just want to get there, to be acknowledged as authors. Use the bad experiences with printers, promotions, editors, agents and reviewers to move on with a force that has to be reckoned with. Remain professional in your attitude, your character, and watch as others will the heights you will gain.

After losing money going with a POD......I decided to strap on for the ride, the scams, the naysayers. I decided that the ills that are in the industry won't make me sick of what I love, writing. We need exposure, those of us that are new as well as those of us who are seasoned, but bad promotion, events, and yes even a book that no one wants to read should not fragment your ability to move on. Bad experiences teach.......cause if it were all good.......everyone would be an author.

Happy Father's Day - A Reason To Thank You

I've lost my Grandfather, my Father, my Uncles, my Friends that were fathers. I remember them for the good times, the good talks, the joy they brought to my life and the countless memories I have of our times together. I often wondered if these me had not been a part of my life where would I be. I wouldn't exist.....You see as we reflect on this day we need remember regardless of the issues, the drama, the separation, the divorces, the lack of parenting, the lack of finances.....without the fathers in our lives.....the beauty of birth, the beauty of our children, the beauty of those we would die for, would not be.

Father's, the head of the household, the supportive man, the understanding man, the man we took vows to be with forever, the man we fell in love with, the man who walked away.......the man who passed away, blessed our lives with our children. In that glorious moment, we loved that man, we respected who he was, we were proud to call him, the Father of our children.

Let us thank him for the gifts, the memories, the lessons, the provisions and support. Let us thank him for being the father of our children, he was there in the beginning, he was our choice. Let us thank him for without him our children wouldn't have those eyes, that smile, that little quirk that reminds us of a time of love; the times that bring a smile to our face when we watch them play, or sleep.

Today, put those unfortunate issues aside. Whatever the reason, death, divorce, separation, lack of understanding, differences.....etc. We love our children and if for no other reason, let's give them a day to celebrate the gift they gave. We embrace our children, our gift, our blessing of the unison of a woman and a man, a mother and a father.

If for no other reason......I thank the men who produced a generation....my grandfather, my father, my uncles, my son...the legacy continues......Father's I thank you.

Chapter 50

ylvia was surprised when Trevor bought her a diamond earring and necklace set. He had the jeweler ship it from New York. She stood in the mirror admiring how the set added to her beauty. Sylvia fingered through her hair flipping it into different styles. A pony tail, bun or just letting it hang allowed the earrings to be shown. She walked over to her closet and pulled out two of her favorite dresses. Sylvia modeled in the mirror pleased with her new accessories. She chose another dress unsure which she would wear to thank Trevor for her gift. He had put the icing on the cake. She was willing to stay in a relationship with him after being showered daily with gifts and money. Carson had never bought her anything without being told what to buy and where to buy it. His solution was handing her his credit card. Sylvia thought Trevor was beginning to care more about her.

The week was filled with his apologies. Trevor explained he had business to take care of during the week that would keep him out all night, street business. Sylvia understood and didn’t ask questions. During the day, they satisfied each other. She would prepare their lunch in the morning and meet him at her place to eat and play during her lunch break from the office. Carson never said much about them spending less time together or her extended lunch hour. Sylvia would bring him a goody package and spend time with him on the weekends to keep his interest on edge.

The employee’s at Klien and Son’s watched as the affairs and habits of Carson Klien grew worse. Sylvia got stares and mumbles whenever she entered an area but her new jewelry would ruffle all feathers when Carson took her to the company dinner later in the year. Sylvia was ahead of the game. She had the executive position in Klien and Sons she had always wanted. Carson was at her finger tips. His want for coke would be supplied by Trevor in exchange for her being there for him. Trevor never mentioned gifts being a part of the deal. Sylvia felt his feelings for her had changed indeed.

They didn’t talk about any future plans, but Sylvia wanted the relationship to continue. She was convinced that Trevor’s thoughts about Cassandra and Lamont would soon become a part of the past. There would definitely be problems with her brothers and family. Sylvia needed to let them know that he was not her supplier but her man. She didn’t know what to say or when to say it, but it needed to be said. Terrance didn’t question seeing Trevor and Sylvia together at the jewelry store. She didn’t know whether or not Terrance told Lamont or Ma’Dear. She needed to talk to Terrance before the picnic just in case Trevor wanted to come along.

Sylvia had taken the day off, and it was close to twelve. Trevor hadn’t called but if he followed their schedule, he would be at her door in an hour. Sylvia hadn’t prepared lunch. Quickly, she took off her earrings and returned her dresses to their place in the closet.

The condo was small compared to most. The floors and wood work gave it an expensive flair. It had two bedrooms, two baths, a kitchen nook, living room and loft. Sylvia liked its location, the center of town. Most of the executives rented living quarters for their clientele to stay in when they visited. Sylvia had a lease with Klien and Sons. Carson would pay the monthly expense if she asked. Sylvia was enjoying the best of both worlds. The view from the second floor showed most of the Philadelphia highlights and was beautiful at night. Sylvia was content in her own world.

Sylvia walked through her condo thinking again about the possible protests her family would present. She decided to ignore the “what ifs”, and any other questions she thought they would ask.

She opened the refrigerator realizing she would have to fix a salad to go with the grilled chicken from the night before. Sylvia started to prepare the salad and changed her mind. She would tell Trevor they should go out to lunch. They both would enjoy the change and maybe spend the afternoon together. Sylvia decided to relax until Trevor arrived.

When the phone rang, she was startled. It was obvious she had dozed off on the couch where she waited for Trevor. The clock on the wall told her it was three thirty. Sylvia glanced at the called ID which read “private number”. It wasn’t Trevor.

“Sylvia, this is Trina.”

“Trina? Trina who?”

“Trina Slater, Cassandra’s old roommate.”

“Oh, yeah what’s up?”

“You tell me. I saw you in Trevor’s car the other day. You and him got something going on other than his dealing?”

“What are you talking about? Better yet what do you care?”

“Where do you think he is when you’re not around?”

“What?”

“Cut the bull Sylvia, he spends his time here with me.”

“How did you get my number?”

“His cell, listen, I know you know by now that Cassandra is no longer in the picture. I am though. I stepped in when she checked out.”

Sylvia listened as Trina filled her with information about Trevor and Cassandra and her invasion of their lover’s paradise, which created a love triangle.

“Sylvia that ain’t going down no more, I’m Trevor’s woman and there’s no room for you.”

“Trina, there must be room for me if you’re calling. I mean you sound like you feel threatened by me being his friend.”

“Is that what it is Sylvia, you’re friends?”

“Friends before lovers, you can’t go wrong if you get to know the man first. I mean before you play, make him pay that way he’ll stay.”

“Where’d you get that whacked shit. Sylvia, I’m fucking Trevor and you need to keep your uptight ass with that white boy, Carson.”

“I think that’s up to Trevor. Talk to him.”

“I did. He said you were his way back to Cassandra. I’m not willing to have that either.”

“Trina, what did you say?”

“You’re his ticket back. He wants to make her jealous, so he picked you. He’s been here keeping me warm, so I won’t get mad while he uses you.”

“I know, Trina. I know. I thought things would change, but if he told you, damn….” Sylvia’s voice faded as she got up looking for the aluminum foil package. After the dose of reality Trina gave her she needed a hit. She tapped the foil onto the glass table and pushed the speaker on the phone. She listened to Trina waiting for the coke to dull the shocking blow that had been delivered.

“Stay away from him Sylvia. He don’t mean you no good.”

Trina had brought her to her senses. Wiping her tears she responded before hanging up the phone.

“I can’t. He threatened to kill my brother.”

I Can Fly

If I gave you my wings, my strength, my guidance, my insight, would you be discouraged or empowered by my light.
If I lead you with knowledge, my experience, my willingness to teach; would you feel unwilling, unable to speak.
If I shared my possessions, all that I have, all that I've done; would you be content with having nothing, refusing to say I gave you, my last, I sacrificed so we could be as one.
I let your heart go, beating its own beat......I'm hearing it now, you are whole, you are complete

If I gave you.......me as an offer of peace; would you see us as enemies, bring the drama, never wanting it to cease.
If I gave you.......what I long for, desire, what I have acquired and need; would you show compassion, realize your actions are the result of jealousy and greed.
I give you this thought, these words you need to hear......I am with you always, but I harbor no fears.
I soar because it is my destiny to rise above the rest, I long to be of the elite, one of the best.

I took the opportunity to read the paper this week
No, seriously read it from sheet to sheet.
Figured I would see what was happening in my home town.
Figured I’d take a media glance since I can’t go out, ya’ know roam around.

I listen to the news from time to time,
hear some of the cellies talking about back in the hood crimes
Didn’t need no names, faces of those that don’t communicate.
That’s how it is when parole don’t even have your date.

I shocked myself reading everyday from front to back
I was even more surprised when I thought, damn everybody must be on crack.
The system is in place to do its thing,
But the crimes of today, what the hell do they mean?

Never mind the murder, muggings and senseless killings,
Smuggling, car theft and the usual drug dealings.
What’s up with the gang banging, initiations, and turf wars?
What’s up with mothers and fathers offing each other, what is that for?

The kids that are being abused, used by adults.
They’ll never survive mentally, always remembering how it felt.
The politicians can’t shuffle the cards fast enough to give a raw deal.
Boys they hired are pulling their plugs keeping it real.

Skeletons are falling out of all closets, even those held most high.
What’s up with the teachers, priest, and rabbi’s?
I’m reading this from a jail cell where I will live probably until I am old.
From this cell I can feel that the world has grown cold.

I cry at times when I think of the fate I chose in my youth, the decisions I made.
Losing my golden years in life is the price I paid.
But for you who are free, and choose what appears to be correct.
You live daily, trying to understand what man calls living perfect.

How perfect can it be with all your fears,
You check yourself and your neighbor daily, just as I do here.
Living not knowing whether the next confrontation may cost you your life,
Praying harder daily for your loved ones, husband and wife.

Wondering if your children took heed and listened to your word of wisdom,
You’re living daily on edge, full of stress and unwanted criticism.
Yeah, I live here, it’s obvious I have been deprived from day to day.
But you who are free what a price you pay.

If you educate your child you will pay a kings fee.
And that payment still don’t guarantee they won’t end up like me.
What about those seeking employment, the want, need, desire for better jobs.
You get your pay only to find with the deductions you’ve been robbed.

Those who look, and talk like me.
Those who are feared by the intellects those who fulfill your society
Have said lock us away and toss the key.
As I read the papers I wondered what is the new punishment to be.

Just a few words from my home this six by nine concrete cell
You think you’re living better,
after reading the paper I can’t tell.

Understanding Friends

As I sit here in semi-solitude trying to awaken from an apparent nightmare.
My eyes become teary heading to endless minutes of soft crying and blank stares.
Another day of mental depression and confusion.
I wouldn’t believe this was not trickery or an illusion.

My peers, my equals had my life in their hands.
There was no doubt they knew I was well raised, and educated, hard working;
God fearing man.
This chaos wasn’t who I was, it didn’t represent me.
I moved, and owned a home in a middle class community.
I left crime, overcame poverty and only visited the ole’ neighborhood.
What is it that the twelve of them misunderstood?

I paid a lawyer with money I saved,
you know those funds you keep for the unexpected rainy days.
I was put where they called me convict, referred to me as a number;
Where I knew it wouldn’t be home, just a temporary stay.
They wouldn’t call me mister, or sir, no one called me by name.
I felt the guilt, the anger and the shame.

As I sit taking these slow breaths
I wondered what my twelve peers thought of me.
How did they decide to pull me away from my world,
my place in society?
Seven men, five women, my peers.
People of mixed race, from different backgrounds, and jobs,
not one familiar face.
Sat starring at me as though each of them was personally disgraced.

Disgraced by my lawyer for making them his choice;
Disgraced by me for my needing them to be my voice.
Innocent until proven guilty.
The right to a fair trial
I had envisioned twelve of my peers willing to walk in my shoes….
at least one mile.

You see I fought back to save myself, child and wife
I fought an attacker who attempted to take our life.
He lived to tell his story, his belief;
He believed they, my peers and society owed him something
to help him through his grief.

He sat humbled, not intimidating, meek not a threat at all.
He never mentioned his weapon,
the gun he held as he made my family beg for our life’s and crawl.
He never mentioned he was in our home.
He invaded our property at night
where we thought we were safe and alone.

In desperation I yelled.
“I can’t take this anymore.
I beat his ass, yes I did, to give my wife and child a chance to run
and get off the floor.
I beat his ass to ruin his plotted plan.
I’ll beat his ass again, let him off the stand.”

My peers, those who saw my point of view nodded in agreement,
it seemed they understood.
It seemed they knew.
Twelve of my peers, those who think like me
would have beat him too.
Being pushed to defend oneself…..
What does one do?

The deliberation was a little long, it took the rest of the day.
The next morning they deliberated more, asked questions, had a lot to say.
They returned to the jurors box and merely agreed.
My outburst, my cry was a guilty plea.

So I sit, thinking when did I become insane,
where did my insanity begin?
I must have been insane to think…….
These twelve peers were understanding friends.

Mother's Day Tribute

Mama, Mama, Mama

The most significant name is a child’s vocabulary.

One that is cherished, one that not all can live up to.

One who gives support, faces our early challenges,

words of our enemies, our foundations.

Without Mama, what would we do?

Always giving, always caring, always loving,

Mama

Trusting, loyal and devoted, our disciplinarian,

Mama

Mama, Mama, Mama

We’ve blossomed together into adulthood, looking beyond what’s visible.

Becoming perfect within ourselves, for ourselves, following mother’s advice.

Each of us has relied on her intuition, once, maybe twice.

Our road in life has been paved with Mama’s wit, sensitivity and love.

Laced with her prayers as guided by her faith in God above.

Mama, our worst and best critic, not meddling or over bearing at all.

Even when not told of our needs, she is prepared to be there;

if we feel weak, stumble or fall.

Gracefully she has accepted her role as grandmother,

her nurturing, guidance and love will never cease.

We have surrounded her with our families as we grow

and her just being Mama gives us mental peace.

Mama, Mama, Mama.

Don't Push.......Let Your Work Speak for Itself

Someone said to me, "You shouldn't have to push hard. Let your work speak for itself." I thought about it......and thought of the things that you don't have to push but are present. I thought about the time I would spend waiting for "action" just because the object was there.

For example, doors, windows, routes of entry and exits. If we don't push, and sometimes with force, we'll never make that step in or out. What about representation of who we are? We give the interviewer the resume and let it do all the speaking at the interview. We meet people daily; what if we never tell them a little about us? Let them judge us by appearance, what we have to show for ourselves, our homes, education etc. I understood totally what was meant by the statement but every now and then the conversation comes back to my mind.

Commercials on the television, the sponsors, how many would succeed if there product was just in the stores for the customer to observe. How would the sales differ? The person went on to say my promoting was "Aggressive" and didn't need to be. Aggressive? I promote on my page, my network, my site and yes, I promote often. Not as often as the "aggressive" commercials, billboards, etc. for products we use daily.

Once the brand is a household name, once the author is known for the work all you have to do is drop the name. Does the campaign to promote end? Is it less "aggressive"? Putting the book at the front door of the Bookstore, the shelf where it can't be missed. The large signs, the bookmarks, the trailers, yes any promotion possible, opens the doors. That "aggressive" push, and you must make yourself known to a public that has no clue about you.

Independent authors, don't push......let your work speak for itself, you will find there is no one listening. You must build and continue to build an audience. If you don't push, no one else will. Post on your site, and by all means have one that is worthy of the readers, publishers, and naysayers to visit. Post a blog, a note, a bulletin, a message on your profile. Be "aggressive" about your work.

You are the voice for your work. There is no voice over commercial for your novel......unless you create it. Just as determined as you were about writing those pages, preparing that manuscript, putting it in the hands of an editor, creating the cover and having it printed. You must plan to market, distribute, and yes promote your work or pay for the job to be done. Your work is not over after you write that book within you.

Don't push......let your work speak for itself......you'll find it will only speak to you.

To The Naysayers

There was a silence as I passed by, nothing was said no reason to reply.....
I've laid a path to follow, I set higher goals
And yes, though I saw you, sneer and grin,
I never asked you to carry my load.

I took small steps, never bit off more than I could chew,
I know you expected me to choke, turn back or look to you
Yes, I saw you whenever there was a detour or a pause,
You were there to remind me it wouldn't be easy,
You spoke about what you thought were my weakness and flaws

My progress was slow, my gains unexpected,
You sought to find my means, belittle those who gave support,
Reminding me I would be left alone if I moved ahead, I'd be unprotected

Yes I understood your shady ways, the games you played, the reasons why
You felt that I should carry you, even as you told others I would never fly.
You were there each step I took, awaiting a chance to say it would never be
But the reality is success is never built on negativity.

So as we meet again as we often do, time once again has put us in the same space
I wish you well, yes I want you to be blessed for I know who you are, unmasked I see your face
A naysayer will do any and everything to distract what is intended to be
But know as I have wished you well, I will reap my own.......you just stand there and wait......you'll see.

Black History Lives

The man looked to be seventy or eighty years old,
And every time I passed him, the thought of his life, stirred my soul
You see, he held his tattered clothes on him as best he could
Nodded his head to those who just passed him by, seemed he understood.

I imagined where he slept at night, when the busy streets calmed down,
I wondered where he ate when the soup kitchens shut down.
The story of his life, the history, memories of his past
Were in each fold and wrinkle of his skin, his time on earth had become his mask.

His gait slow, steady no real destination, in no hurry to move on
The need to be somewhere was no longer a desire, his motivation gone.
There were those that spoke to him daily as we waited for the D train
He'd respond with a wave of his hand, a pause, a thought and then he'd move again.

I studied him each morning knowing he was not alone in this often cold world
He had to have family, relatives, a connection, maybe a son or a daughter, grands.....a boy and a girl.
I thought about our plight throughout history, being slaves longing to be free
I wondered what stopped him on the road of progress, was he a part of the dream for Dr. King.

He's talking today to every one that passes him by,
Telling them it's Black History Month and how proud he is to be alive
He's rattling off names of our Black Historians, and the contributions they made
Then someone yells, "Old timer you musta been in the fields back then, was you ever a slave?"

His answer caused silence everyone turned, some shocked, many in delight
"If I had been a slave, I would have put up a good fight,
Just cause one don't have, don't mean you don't treat him right.
You've been walking through here daily disrespecting women cussing, with you pants hangin off your butt
If you had been a slave, you'd understand the pride of a man, I can see you ain't been taught much.
You pass me each day talking 'bout what I need and what I ain't got
I took the time to go to school, got street smarts, and that means a lot.
Boy don't interrupt me as I pay honor to those who paved the way
It's because of them, you ain't a slave today!!"

The young man couldn't find the words, none were decent and he dared not confront the old man's grin
This withered soul picked up his collection of items and continued with his list naming famous black men.
"Hey boy name me someone you read about, a African American who you represent......
Not one that's living today, one who touched you from the past, told you what Black History meant.

The train whistled its arrival the crowd began to move, the young man remained where he stood
As the train pulled off I watched from the window, the old man's message good

I closed my eyes praying silently that lessons of yesterday, would change the young man's tomorrow
I prayed he would touch one, who would touch another,
I prayed that his lesson in history would be a lesson he would borrow.

As I Lifted Myself Higher

As I lifted myself higher I sought the next level of life's game,
You see I have always be inspired to push, want and desire for more,
A message from my parents, grandparents, and mentors, always look for the blessing
For if God doesn't open the window, he'll make a way for you to walk through closed doors.

I walked a path others don't often see, private education, college, learning became my jewel
I cashed it in for career goals, took on jobs, seeking the next following those embedded rules
As I lifted myself higher, I thought of where I came from, how far I could go
I bend and pray each day for others, hoping my being would touch their soul.

As I lifted myself higher, I found challenges, detours and those who turned their backs
You see, not every was straightforward, not every one treated me with respect or tact
Not everyone carried my dreams or desires, there were those who didn't care,
As I lifted myself higher, they looked on from a distance with disbelief and stares.

As I lifted myself higher, on a level that brings me peace of mind, and mental rewards
I had to sever a few friendships, relationships, I've even cut the family umbilical chord.
For you see to reach the next level, just a step from where you are
You've got to reach beyond where you stand today,
and afterward set new standards and raise your own level of achievement, raising your bar.

Don't wait for anyone to be a determining factor of how far you can go.......
I say this for I lifted myself higher......and still I have far to go.

Carpious Mightson is single, has been married, has no children, and is living what appears to be a simple, unblemished life. He is a Godly man with values, morals and respect for himself, his neighbors and others. This page turning novel by Kenn Bivins takes the reader through the days that lead Carpious, the main character back to his past. When confronted by what he has forgotten, yet not forgiven he finds himself questioning who he is versus who he portrays himself to be. Carpious seems to have it all together, he's a model neighbor, a deacon in the church, and on the verge of starting a relationship after the turmoils of his divorce seemed to have been resolved. His life changes when Sydney Durden let's him know she is just as interested in him as he is in her, Ian Kaplan moves into the neighborhood, and his ex-wife Alethea returns. It is then that the reader finds, Carpious is living a lie.

Pious is a story about forgiving and moving on. It is easy to say forgive and forget, but realistically we don't often forget what tears us to the core. Carpious built his new life from a torn core. He attached himself to a new neighborhood, new surroundings, a church family and a new life. Forgetting where he came from, what the life he led had been like would have been easier if he just forgave himself and others before he moved on. Karma often brings things of the past back to light. In an effort to keep his past in the past, he takes matters in his hands as the man he was not the man he became. This novel of twists and turns is a page turner, a quick and intriguing reading. I had trouble with the authors narration. At times I thought it was disconnected as though it was not a novel but a play, or movie being directed. This form of writing did not take away from the storyline. I would definitely read another novel by Kenn Bivins.

Just Venting - "Tis The Season"

As I put up the tree this year, decorating it without giving thought to the Christmas Carols playing on the radio. I let my mind drift back to the days when Christmas was filled with excitement for everyone. Had I gotten to old to be filled with the spirit of giving? Had I become overwhelmed with life's ups and downs?

I allowed myself to be taken in by today's news, the forecast of yesterday, and forgotten the blessings yet to come. I had forgotten that the excitement that filled my spirit in my youth was knowing that I had done what "Santa" said. I had been nice, I had made my wish and for that alone, I would be rewarded with gifts left under the tree. I smiled to myself as I remembered catching "Santa" and learning the rewards were signs of unconditional love. I came into my adulthood recognizing each Christmas gift as a sign, a symbol of that love.

"Tis The Season", now after my children have moved on to raise their children to understand the lesson of giving and receiving. I listened to the silence, no bickering about the ornaments, no questions about the color scheme, no comical memories of the Christmas' that passed. When did they get that old? Where did the time go? How I longed for those moments?

"Tis The Season", I love the lights, I love the decorations, I love the spirit. I love the memories. My youngest grand stood looking at the ornaments and with her dimpled smile she said, "It's beautiful, it's amazing." I felt a twinge of joy, I felt the chill of excitement as my spirit began to refill. We decorated the tree together, yes me and a two year old angel.

God sends us a message when we least expect it. "Tis The Season" for each of us to be an angel to others. To bring back that spirit of excitement to the soul that has been worn throughout the year with frustrations. To bring tears of joy to those who have struggled after the lost of loved ones. To bring encouragement to the hearts of those who have lost a desire to move on. God sent me strength this year through the voice of a baby......whose thought of decorating the tree with her grandmother was "beautiful and amazing."
